Pregnancy Care

Imagine appointments that enable a gaining of confidence to trust your own body with someone who listens and guides you.

At Helena Birth Studio, you are a full partner in your prenatal care. Your prenatal appointments will last approximately 45 minutes. The majority of your appointment will take place in the comfort of our consultation room where we will provide education about your body’s physical and emotional changes, discuss nutrition, and give you opportunities to ask questions. We will offer helpful suggestions for dealing with pregnancy-related issues. Next, we will move to the exam area where your midwife will listen to your baby’s heartbeat, check your baby’s growth and position, and assess your vital signs.

Prenatal appointments are scheduled monthly until 28-weeks, every two weeks until 36 weeks, and weekly until you give birth. If you are planning a homebirth, your appointment at 36-37 weeks will take place at your home.

Prenatal testing and genetic screening are offered according to individual desire. Routine lab work and ultrasounds will be ordered by your midwife.

Labor & Birth Care

Imagine continuous hands-on support, with the ability to move freely and listen to your body.

Once you are in active labor, your midwife will meet you at your home or the birth center. She will stay with you throughout labor and birth to offer support and monitor both you and your baby. Helena Birth Studio employs evidence-based practices which include allowing you to eat and drink in labor and monitoring your baby’s heartbeat with a hand-held doppler. This enables you the freedom to move, soak in a warm bath, and labor in a position that is most comfortable for you.

Your midwife will offer careful support in the pushing position of your choice. Your baby will be placed immediately on your abdomen for skin to skin contact, and you will be assisted with breastfeeding. After your new family has had adequate bonding time, the initial newborn exam will be performed next to your side. You will not be separated from your baby.

Postpartum Care

Imagine continuous care that extends beyond birth.

Your midwife will stay with you until you and your baby have bonded, nursed, and you have had a hot meal and postpartum instructions have been explained. Now, you are ready to depart the birth center, or for the midwives to leave your home.

Birth Center

Imagine a home-away-from-home environment.

For some couples, a homebirth just isn’t what they are looking for, and yet the hospital doesn’t feel like the right fit either. The Helena Birth Studio offers a happy medium for couples looking for a comfortable home (away from home) environment. This birth center service boasts a warm and comfortable birthing suite with a jetted whirlpool tub. This suite is available for your exclusive use during labor, birth, and immediate recovery period.

Homebirth

Imagine your midwife meeting you where you are.

Helena Birth Studio offers homebirth for clients desiring this option. Your midwife will offer you instructions on how to prepare your home for your birth. She will visit you in your home around 36 weeks to help you add the final touches to your preparations. When you go into labor, she will bring all her supplies to your home to facilitate a safe birth. She will stay with you until you and your baby are stable and she will provide 24/7 on-call phone support until she returns 1-2 days later.

Waterbirth

Imagine your baby entering the world in a safe, calm environment.

Waterbirth is available to all clients who desire this option. Your midwife will monitor your baby with a water-proof doppler as you relax in warm water. Helena Birth Studio offers clients a jetted whirlpool tub designed for water immersion to promote comfort and relaxation. If you are having your baby at home, your midwife will lend you an inflatable birth tub for your use.

Breastfeeding Support

Imaging a wonderful emotional bond that supplies the perfect nutrition for your baby.

Breastfeeding is natural and beneficial, but that doesn’t always mean that it doesn’t come with its challenges. Your midwife is trained to assist you with breastfeeding and offers 24/7 phone support. She maintains community connections with lactation professionals to get you advanced care when needed. Through regular communication and home visiting, your midwife will assess breastfeeding and your newborn’s weight gain to launch you on a trajectory for breastfeeding success.

VBAC

Imagine a natural birth after a previous cesarean.

Helena Birth Studio offers women who have had a previous cesarean section the option of a natural birth. Vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC) is available at the Birth Studio or in your home. Recently, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) stated that VBAC is safer than a repeat cesarean.

Childbirth Education Classes

Imagine equipping yourself with tools of information so there are no surprises.

FAQ

I am due soon. Is it too late to switch?

If you desire to be a true partner in your care and discover how different things can be when you have true informed choice, you may be a good candidate for our care. You are a good candidate if you’ve had a healthy pregnancy, free of high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, or other risk factors; are pregnant with one baby; and have been receiving regular prenatal care throughout your pregnancy.

Do you accept insurance?

We can bill insurance after the birth, and reimbursement will be according to the details of your policy. Early in pregnancy care, we can run a verification of benefits so that you can understand what your policy covers. No surprises!

Do you accept Medicaid?

No. Medicaid does not reimburse direct-entry midwives in Montana at this time.
